Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea has been supported by Young Academics for many years. But this year, at our Schofields Lillyana centre, the cause became especially personal.
One of our preschool children is bravely facing their own cancer journey after recently being diagnosed with Wilms’ tumour, a form of kidney cancer that primarily affects young children. Despite the incredibly difficult time for the family, they have generously chosen to share their journey in the hope of raising awareness about childhood cancer and encouraging other parents to listen closely when children complain of pain or discomfort.
Although Wilms’ tumour is highly treatable, early intervention is key. The parents want their experience to teach other parents to trust their instincts and seek medical advice when something doesn’t seem right. It is about helping other families feel confident to ask questions, listen closely and advocate for their child’s wellbeing.
Coming Together for a Cause Close to Our Hearts
In support of the family and the important work of Cancer Council, our Schofields Lillyana centre hosted a community morning tea at a local park on Saturday, 23 May.
Families, educators, children and community members gathered to connect, share food, raise awareness and contribute to a cause that had become deeply meaningful to everyone involved. The support from the community was immediate and heartfelt, raising $800 before the event began. Surrounded by a loving and generous community, on the day the fundraising amount reached over $1,350.
It was a powerful reminder that small acts of kindness, when shared across a community, can create a very real impact.
Inspired by How the Birds Got Their Colours
The theme of the morning tea was inspired by one the children’s favourite books, How the Birds Got Their Colours.
In this beautiful story, the birds come together to help an injured dove, showing kindness, care and selflessness during a time of need. Through their actions, colour, hope and transformation are brought into the world.
This theme carried a beautiful connection to the purpose of the morning tea. Families affected by cancer often rely on the strength, compassion and support of those around them. Just like the birds in the story, our community came together to offer care, raise awareness and bring hope during a challenging time.
Children and families enjoyed bird-themed platters lovingly prepared by our educators, while families generously brought along plates to share. A very special cockatiel also joined us for the story, bringing a little extra magic to the morning.
A Community Built on Care
What made the morning tea so special was not only the amount raised, but the way our community showed up.
Families gave generously. Educators created a warm and thoughtful experience. Children engaged with a story about kindness and helping others. Together, everyone played a part in creating a morning filled with colour, connection and compassion.
For our centre, this experience highlighted the strength of community in the most genuine way. It showed what can happen when people come together around a shared purpose and a desire to support one another.
We are incredibly grateful to every family, educator and community member who contributed, donated, attended or helped spread awareness.
Most importantly, we extend our heartfelt support to the child and family at the centre of this story. Their courage, generosity and willingness to help others through their own experience has deeply moved our community.
