Growing Up with Grit: Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs Lessons on Perseverance for Children

In sports, we often hear stories of determination and perseverance as athletes face setbacks, obstacles and challenges. These stories of resilience not only inspire adults but serve as valuable lessons for children. Resilience and grit are part of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs team ethos where lessons from players can teach children about perseverance in their own lives.

Embracing Challenges

Children encounter challenges in their everyday lives. Whether it’s learning a new skill, facing academic hurdles or navigating social situations, challenges are inevitable. At the Bulldogs, whether it’s a lost game or injury incurred, challenges are not seen as obstacles but rather opportunities for growth which are embraced head on, teaching children to have resilience and confidence in their abilities.

Never Give Up

The Bulldogs epitomise the spirit of never giving up, even in the face of adversity. Children can learn from their example and that setbacks are temporary where perseverance is the key to success. Encourage children to adopt a ‘never give up’ attitude, emphasising the importance of determination, resilience and hard work.

Support and Teamwork

In team sports such as Rugby League, success is not achieved alone but rather through support, cooperation and teamwork. Children can learn the value of collaboration, communication and camaraderie by working together with their peers towards a common goal. Encourage children to support one another, offer help and encouragement and celebrate others success’ no matter how big or small. To motivate children to strive for excellence reinforce their sense of accomplishment and getting them to acknowledge and recognise milestones and achievements.

Learn From Mistakes

Mistakes and setbacks are a natural part of life, but it is how we respond to these which matters most. The Bulldogs teach us that failure is an opportunity for growth and learning. Encourage children to see challenges as learning experiences, encouraging them to self-reflect on how they can improve.

Setting goals

To achieve success, setting goals are often required to keep you on track and stay focused. Encourage children to set achievable and realistic goals for themselves whether this relates to personal, physical or academic pursuits. Teach them the importance of determination in reaching goals and working hard to achieve them even when faced with obstacles along the way.

Incorporating the above lessons into your home setting can inspire children to develop perseverance, resilience and grit in their own lives. Remember though, that growing up with grit isn’t just about winning – It’s about developing the inner strength to keep going.
