Unlocking secrets to childhood happiness

Unlocking secrets to childhood happiness

Every parent’s dream is for their child to have a fulfilling and happy childhood. At Young Academics we share the same dream, promoting the development of learning, wonder, curiosity and imagination. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly bring happiness to children. As parents, understanding the secrets to childhood happiness can assist in creating an environment for children to thrive socially, emotionally and mentally.

Cultivating Connection

A fundamental aspect of early childhood happiness is strong emotional connections whether this be with parents, sibling or family members. Spending quality time together, actively listening to your child and engaging in conversations can foster a sense of belonging and security. Ensure you set aside time to bond with your child, whether this be through shared experiences, activities or story time.

Fostering a positive environment

Children thrive in environments where positivity is encouraged. Create a nurturing environment in the home by focusing on your child’s strengths, providing constrictive criticism and celebrating their achievements. Encourage a growth mindset early on through modelling positive behaviours and reframing challenges or setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning.

Encourage play and exploration

Play is an essential component of childhood development and happiness. Hence why the Young Academics curriculum is primarily play-based. Encourage unstructured playtime where your child can explore interests, develop social skills and unleash their creativity. The most valuable lessons are often learnt through play.

Encourage Individuality

As every child is unique, with their own strengths, interests and quirks encourage them to express this authentically. Validate their feelings, opinions and provide opportunities for them to develop a strong sense of self-worth and confidence.

Prioritise wellbeing and health

A healthy body and mind is crucial for childhood happiness. Encourage healthy habits such as regular physical activity, balanced eating and mindfulness practises. Teach your children the importance of self-care and help them develop strategies for self-regulation.

Set Boundaries and structure

Set age-appropriate limits, rules and expectations with children. Whilst autonomy and freedom are equally important, children also require consistent routines and clear boundaries. Establish predictable routines for important parts of the day such as mealtime, homework and bedtime so children can pre-empt what’s to come next.

Cultivate kindness and gratitude

Model acts of kindness and compassion towards others, demonstrating a sense of social responsibility and empathy. Fostering kindness and gratitude can instil a sense of fulfillment in children. As a family, express gratitude for the little joys in your day, showing your children that each moment is precious from seeing a friend, a beautiful sunrise or enjoying a nice meal.

Unlocking the secrets to childhood happiness requires the prioritisation of play, health, gratitude and connection. Remember that we should not only just strive for happiness. If we set happiness as a goal, children will believe all other emotions such as sadness, fear and struggle become failure. Rather than focusing on happiness, strive for meaningful experiences and connections where children feel empowered, loved and valued.
