Inspiring Young Minds Through Everyday Discovery

Inspiring Young Minds Through Everyday Discovery

From mixing colours to watching plants grow, science is already a natural part of your child’s world. At Young Academics, we use National Science Week as a catalyst to spark curiosity and introduce scientific thinking in fun, age-appropriate ways, laying the foundation for lifelong learning and discovery.

Celebrated across Australia each August, National Science Week is the perfect opportunity to explore, experiment and ask “why?” something our little learners are experts at!

Why Introduce Science in Early Childhood?

You don’t need lab coats or Bunsen burners to introduce science in the early years. In fact, science for young children is all about:

  • Exploring cause and effect (What happens when I mix these two colours?)
  • Observing changes (How do plants grow?)
  • Asking questions (Why does it rain?)
  • Testing predictions (Will it float or sink?)

At Young Academics, we embed these concepts into everyday play, helping children build confidence in their thinking and communication skills.

How We Celebrate National Science Week

Our educators design engaging, sensory-rich experiences that introduce basic scientific concepts through hands-on play. During National Science Week, our centres are buzzing with activities like:

Rainbow Experiments

Children mix coloured water, ice or jelly crystals to learn about primary colours, reactions and absorption.

Sink or Float?

A simple water table becomes a science lab as children test which objects sink or float encouraging early prediction and observation skills.

Nature Detectives

Exploring the outdoor yard or garden beds, children become ‘scientists’ looking for bugs, leaves, seeds and signs of life.

Magnifying Fun

Using magnifying glasses, children explore textures and patterns on everyday objects introducing the idea of close observation.

Building Science Skills That Last a Lifetime

Science in early childhood is about nurturing a mindset of exploration. Through scientific play, children learn to:

  • Ask thoughtful questions
  • Make predictions
  • Test their ideas
  • Reflect on outcomes

These foundational skills support learning across all domains – literacy, numeracy, emotional intelligence and more.

At Young Academics, we believe science belongs in every child’s day, because discovery is part of how they make sense of the world around them. National Science Week is a chance to celebrate those everyday investigations and encourage children to keep asking, exploring, and experimenting.
