National Science Week 2021: Cupcake Towers

Youngacademics, 16 Aug 2021

Welcome to National Science Week 2021. This year's theme is Food: Different by Design, in honour of United Nations' International Year of Fruits and Vegetables and the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development. At Young Academics Early Learning Centre, we celebrate Science and Technology through our holistic approach to learning, recognising the value of imaginative teaching and creative learning experiences. This Cupcake Towers experience is designed to encourage children to build upon their sensory exploration skills and hand-eye coordination.

You'll need:

  • Shaving foam*

  • PVA glue

  • Paint/Food colouring of your choice (or you can mix them — we used white, pink, blue and yellow)

  • Cupcake tray

  • Plastic cups

  • Any toppings of your choice (like buttons, leaves, flower petals)

Instructions:

  1. Half fill cups with shaving foam, then add a squirt of PVA glue into each cup, followed by food dye or paint. Use a paddle pop stick to stir until you get the puffy paint. This paint can be used to create puffy pictures, and other fun things.

  2. Set up muffin tray, with coloured foam, buttons and other decorations you would like to use. Encourage your child to create their own colourful concoctions, and watch their discovery unfold!

*Alternatively, If you would like to make this experience without shaving foam, you can also use aquafaba (this is the strained liquid from chickpea cans); a pinch of cream of tartar, and food dye. Simply whisk the aquafaba until soft peaks appear, add a pinch of cream of tartar, then separate into bowls and stir in the food colouring.

Don't forget to share your creations on social media and tag #youngacademics.
