8 Top Tips for a Smooth Childcare Drop Off

Youngacademics, 14 Jun 2023

The start of the day can be a hectic and stressful time, especially regarding childcare drop-off. However, it doesn’t have to be a dreaded experience for parents and children.

Although starting school may be a simple concept, it is important to understand the concept of ‘transition’ and how this may impact a child.

What is a ‘transition’ to childcare and how does it relate to the drop-off?

Transitions, or simply changes, occur when children switch from the care of their parents to their educators, move to a different location, or switch from one activity to another. For a child, transitions are huge!

Although children experience many difficult transitions throughout their lifetime, the one from their home environment to childcare is more than likely their first significant experience of change. As it is one of many, viewing this change as a positive, exciting milestone on the learning journey is vital.

Viewing the ‘drop-off’ as a positive and exciting juncture in your child’s life can significantly affect their ability to adjust to their new environment and, in turn, learning.

Tips for a smooth childcare drop-off

By implementing some valuable tips, you can start the early education journey on a positive note and set the tone for a successful day and journey ahead, making drop-off a smooth and stress-free part of your daily routine.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-timer, these tips will make the process easier for everyone involved.

TIP

WHAT TO DO

WHY

1 Prepare your Child  Let your child know what to expect during the day, such as what activities they will be doing and who they will spend time with—their lovely teachers and friends. This can help ease their anxieties about being away from you.
2 Avoid Rushing  Give yourself plenty of time in the morning to avoid rushing the drop off. Rushing can add stress and anxiety to the situation for both you and your child. Ways to save time include packing their bag, preparing their outfit for the day, or letting your child prepare for the day with you—the night before!
3 Arrive before prime-time Arrive at the centre early to allow for a calm and unhurried drop-off and goodbye. Before 8:30 a.m. is always best to avoid peak times for drop-offs; use this quiet time to catch up with your child’s educator and discuss any concerns or updates you may need for the day/week ahead.
4 Say Goodbye… With Confidence!  When it is time to say goodbye, avoid lingering or showing any sadness (although this is tough!), as this can make it more difficult for your child to say goodbye. Instead, confidently say goodbye and reassure them that you will return later.
5 Stay Positive  Avoid showing your own stress or anxiety to your child. Use positive language and affirmations throughout the entire process to help your child feel confident and reassured. If your child is upset, acknowledge their feelings and provide comfort and support, and always remind them that you will be back soon for pick-up!
6 Keep the routine  Creating a consistent drop-off routine can help children feel more secure and comfortable. A simple one is to remind your child from the time they wake up that today is a ‘school’ day, mentally preparing them for their day. Set a specific time and morning routine for drop off and stick to it.
7 Communicate with your centre  Take the time to talk to your child’s educators about any concerns or issues that may arise during drop-off. They may have suggestions on how to make the transition smoother. In addition, allow them to ensure your child feels safe and secure at the time of drop off.
8 Follow-up (if need be)  After the drop-off, take a few minutes to reflect on the experience—think about what went well and what could be improved for next time. If your child had a problematic drop-off, follow up with their educator to discuss strategies for smoother future drop-offs.
How we help: welcoming your child through partnering with you

Young Academics Early Education Centres strongly emphasise forming meaningful partnerships with children and their families, which ensures that each child’s development is supported at home and in the centre.

Young Academics forms strong partnerships with families through open communication through the OWNA application. We regularly update families on their child’s progress and encourage families to share concerns or feedback. This open dialogue helps build trust between families and educators and ensures that everyone works towards the same goals for the child’s development.

By getting to know each child and their family, Young Academics can meet the specific needs of children, creating a sense of belonging and connection for the child and fostering a positive environment where each child can thrive—the foundation for building understanding between educators, families, and most importantly, your child.

We also strongly emphasise family involvement in your child’s learning. Educators work with families to develop learning plans that reflect each child’s unique interests and strengths and encourage families to participate in activities and events at the centre. This involvement strengthens the bond between families and the centre and helps reinforce the child’s learning and development in all aspects.

Transitioning your child to a Young Academics Centre near you
